Why Write Fanfiction?

A few things to consider

Why would y'all even write a fanfic? Some might say "information technology's not similar you are getting paid for it." It's truthful that yous won't make whatsoever coin from your fanfiction (and if you lot do, that's probably illegal) but there are many other benefits, such equally improving your writing skills, stimulating your fantasy and giving your favorite story a "amend" ending or a spin-off you always wanted to see in the original work.

Let'due south non forgot the social aspect, likewise. The Cyberspace lets you lot publish your story instantly, getting a lot of readers to post reviews and comments that volition help you amend. Plus, it feels great to get positive reviews from people saying that they loved your work. Of course, then there's always the pressure from your fans to release the next chapter sooner. Tips For Writing Your Get-go One

Some bones advice for newbie fanfiction writers

  • Spelling and grammar are of import. If you think those are your weak points, get someone to proof-read your story if possible ("beta" in fanfiction slang), or at to the lowest degree run a spell-checker. Finding a beta and letting him to read your story before releasing each chapter is always a adept idea even if your spelling is great.
  • Try to understand the feelings and motives of the characters in the original work. Explicate the changes they experience in your fic. A person can't go from a wuss to a badass in one mean solar day, simply speaking. There's nothing stopping your fantasy and getting crazy with the characters, but in that case, people usually tag their stories as AU (Alternate Universe).
  • Information technology'southward an first-class thought to have a rough draft of the whole fic, or at least an outline, before starting to post chapters online.
  • Do non give in to the pressure level of readers. Don't get discouraged by the negative comments, just pay attending to constructive criticism. Your readers might requite you good ideas for improving the story, but always think that you are the writer.
  • Your story should make sense. Yes, you can write whatever you lot desire - however, it's commonly a good idea to think of a nice plot, not to have any perfect characters but taking revenge on everyone during the whole fic. That being said, a well-written crackfic tin exist quite fun!
  • Finally, the specifics of fanfiction bated, it's really similar writing any other kind of story. Y'all nonetheless need to have some writing skills (and in that location are tons of information online on how to ameliorate them). Fanfiction is really a proficient fashion to start writing and should be much easier than creating an original work from scratch, considering you already take characters and world created for you lot. All y'all accept to exercise is play around with them.

Thanks.

It actually depends, but Tumblr tin be a great place to find fanfic if yous know what you're looking for. The grammar and overall content is much meliorate than some of the stuff I've seen on Fanfiction.net or Wattpad.

SV on March 17, 2017:

Wattpad i have to say is very practiced for people as a starting fanfic website. It is really easy to apply and you can apply it for more than just fan fiction. It is likewise a great style to get recongized and you tin can fifty-fifty win money for submitting a story, right now they are having a horror competttion and the prize is 20,000 dollars.

Jec_014 on Jan 26, 2017:

Fanfiction.internet is the largest for fanfiction, Wattpad is the easiest website to write on, and Quotev has extra matter you can do (similar make quizzes) that you tin can't do on Wattpad or Fanfiction.

Yard on October 20, 2016:

I am familiar with both fanfiction.net and AO3 (a.g.a. Archive of Our Own); and contrary to some of the other comments, I'd have to say fanfiction.net is better in two distinctive means:

1: Using a mobile device with the search part of AO3 is a relative nightmare. Sure, you get to utilise more terms at once; but their accessibility (and slight railroading) ensures yous demand a larger screen merely to sort through what you don't desire.

ii: Fanfiction.net just has more content as of posting this. I don't know if that will ever truly change merely then far that's how things are.

And for anyone who wants to argue well-nigh quality: fanfiction.net and AO3 are about equal. That'due south right, both sites have people who don't know the first thing about writing (including myself). It'due south just that fanfiction.net has more content overall, so it looks worse. And while fanfiction.cyberspace is supposed to not allow developed content, I'd argue at least a third of the stories comprise lemons or other explicit developed content.

So there you have it, try both and form your own opinion. Just know this: For most authors on these sites, fan fiction is a phase lasting a few years at all-time. You will, at some point, find stories yous similar that won't ever exist finished. You take been warned.

Oh, and I'll bank check some of those other mentioned websites: a big thanks to yous, author of this article.

Soquilii on October 17, 2016:

Fanfiction-dot-cyberspace's quality is divebombing with their frequent glitches. I never idea I'd say this merely AO3 is surpassing FFnet, both in quality of content and ease of posting/editing. I've been with FFnet many years only I prefer AO3 these days.

Wattpad may non be the most popular website, simply it is useful. A lot of writers even admit that they used to accept an account it helps build writer grapheme. More than common people use the app or website and its great to meet writers. Yous tin utilize this app/website all over the earth, from what I've seen. They take meet and greets with famous writers. I'thou certain some of you have heard of the fan fiction Louder the author has become very famous. Her story has gone way past the website and has been shared a lot. I love information technology personally because the app/website is not only used for fan fiction its used for regular stories too. Information technology doesn't cost any money what so ever. They have competitions for recognitions of the stories you've written. I could say so much more than, but I accept to stop XD All around Wattpad is also a swell fan fiction website y'all should check it out. Look me up too XD username:Madilove23

Absolutely visit Squidge'southward WWOMB [Wonderful World of Makebelieve]! This site never gets listed and damn well SHOULD be. Is it kid-friendly? No, it is for adults who want to read the writing of other adults. Authors at WWOMB practise not have to 'dumb down' their stories to suit anybody.

I have posted my work there for 10 years and never have had whatsoever of my works censored. I encourage folks to visit and discover whole, new globe of fanfic.

Khaos on August 10, 2016:

In terms of how easy you can navigate the websit wattpad trumps fanfiction.net and AO3 (I utilize all 3 so I tin say this) just in terms of content fanfiction.net and AO3 are better because they have content that is specifically what the reader is looking for not l tonne of random story'south like in wattpad and in terms of mature content AO3 is by far the best place to get it

So in some cases aye wattpad is a better identify then the other two (not always and information technology'due south meliorate if you want your story to be discovered by other more often ) but it ofttimes lacks a substantial corporeality of results (and that's why I'm looking for a new fanfic website)

Soquilii on Nov 13, 2015:

Fanfiction.net is the best. I've been writing for twenty+ years and never saw anything better. AO3 is ok but don't look for a lot of feedback; those folks barely postal service kudos much less comments. Quotev is similar. Ficme and Ficwad are jokes. The others are not worth mentioning. Stick to Fanfiction.internet for splendid statistics, a wide base of readers and people who have the courtesy to annotate on your hard work.

@SororPeregrina: I used to have a couple of stories up on ff.cyberspace and I learned to have the comments with laugh, especially the negative ones that were obviously trolling for attention. XD Don't say you like it if you haven't read it however! Some other person commented with "I detest this!" and so came back the following day to say "I don't know if you got my commencement comment just I still hate this!" Could they exist more than obvious most their trolling?

By contrast, I've never been trolled on annihilation I posted on AO3.

SororPeregrina on August 03, 2012:

Ane affair I learned: cliques run rampant on these sites. Especially on FF.Internet, NEVER post a fanfic story to a fandom where i person believes she owns a particular character and has a huge following that thinks the aforementioned. No matter how good your story is, they volition come downwards on you like a ten-ton boulder and tear you lot to bloody shreds. I plant this out the hard way, and it'southward worse than existence reamed by the critics for the New York Times. Consequently, while I'll certainly read on fanfic sites (guilty pleasure!), for my own extremely occasional forays into information technology, I'd rather post on my ain blog.

The actual fanfiction area of harrypotterfanfiction is actually nice, but the staff on the forum site are incredibly rude.

MitchAllan on Apr 29, 2012:

This was a keen list of resource, thank you!

As a note: I would definitely recommend Fan Fiction and Fan Communities in the Age of the Internet that you linked to in your Amazon widget. I read it for an essay at uni, and even though it'southward a petty dated, it was incredibly informative and a lot of fun!

JoyfulReviewer on April 27, 2012:

Great lens!!!!

I believe that Truthful Blood it is not regular vampire story like the ones that we are already used to watchâ¦with the incommunicable honey and the man girl that falls for the vampire and has to become through a lot of obstacles to exist togetherâ¦. This is much more than that!!! It is an heady vampire story with stiff personality, which makes yous believe in the real existence of these evil creatures. It is a refreshing new view of the vampires testify.
